Efficiency first and expansion second was the message delivered to the 650-strong audience at the Irish Grasslands Association annual dairy conference. The conference took place on Wednesday 17th January at the Charleville Park Hotel, Co Cork.

Towards the end of 2017 the Irish Grassland Association completed a short member survey asking what events they would most like to see for the coming year, following the feedback received it was decided to run an event focused on grazing infrastructure.

Dairy Summer TourFocus on high profit and high return dairying


The Irish Grasslands Dairy Summer Tour focused on high profit and high return on investment milk production when it visited two grass based dairy farms at Shinagh Dairy Farm and Rearour, Aherla.  The event, sponsored by AIB Bank, took place on Tuesday July 24th.  The major focus of this year’s event is achieving a high whole farm profit and converting a leased farm to milk production to achieve a high return on investment.  Maximising the use of grazed grass in the cows’ diet featured prominently on both farms.

The 2018 Irish Grassland Association Annual Dairy Conference sponsored by Yara takes place at 9am on Wednesday 17th January. Moving to the south west of the country, the Charleville Park Hotel plays host to this year’s Conference. The event addresses the twin themes of managing labour and resetting financial and physical targets on Irish dairy farms.
