Towards the end of 2017 the Irish Grassland Association completed a short member survey asking what events they would most like to see for the coming year, following the feedback received it was decided to run an event focused on grazing infrastructure.
This year’s IGA sheep conference took place in the Horse and Jockey hotel in Co Tipperary. The format was similar to previous years with an indoor conference in the morning followed by a farm walk in the afternoon.
The Irish Grassland Association Beef conference took place on Thursday May 24th in the Clonard Court Hotel, Dublin Road, Athy, Co. Kildare. This year the conference focused on three areas:
-Maximising grass growth on beef farms.
-What the science of breeding can do to increase the chances of genetic gain in the Beef herd .
-Beef producers –connecting with the final consumer.
Focus on high profit and high return dairyingThe Irish Grasslands Dairy Summer Tour focused on high profit and high return on investment milk production when it visited two grass based dairy farms at Shinagh Dairy Farm and Rearour, Aherla. The event, sponsored by AIB Bank, took place on Tuesday July 24th. The major focus of this year’s event is achieving a high whole farm profit and converting a leased farm to milk production to achieve a high return on investment. Maximising the use of grazed grass in the cows’ diet featured prominently on both farms.
The 2018 Irish Grassland Association Annual Dairy Conference sponsored by Yara takes place at 9am on Wednesday 17th January. Moving to the south west of the country, the Charleville Park Hotel plays host to this year’s Conference. The event addresses the twin themes of managing labour and resetting financial and physical targets on Irish dairy farms.

The Irish Grassland Association held its annual sheep conference and farm walk in Mullingar on the 11th May 2017. The day started with a highly informative conference in the Bloomfield Hotel, Mullingar. Delegates arrived on time in glorious sunshine and the day’s events improved from there.
This year’s Irish Grasslands Dairy Summer Tour, sponsored by AIB Bank focused on milk production on leased land visiting grass based dairy farms in Skeaghvasteen, Co. Kilkenny and Tullow, Co. Carlow on Tuesday July 25th. With stocking rate increasing by approximately 10% since quota removal and one third of dairy farmers renting an estimated 30% of the land they farm, leasing land to increase milk production was the focus of this year’s event. The topic attracted a record audience - over 600 dairy farmers from around the country attended the event.
