Alex Sheehan farms in partnership with his father, Johnny, on the outskirts of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. Since joining the family farm, he has placed a strong focus on grassland management and genetics, helping to increase grass utilisation, animal performance, and milk solids output.
A graduate of UCD’s Dairy Business degree programme in 2018, Alex gained valuable international experience working on a 1,400-cow dairy farm in Canterbury, New Zealand, where he developed a strong understanding of large-scale pasture and livestock management. He also spent five months in Teagasc Moorepark, further strengthening his knowledge of profitable grass-based dairy systems.
Alex joined Tirlán in 2018 and currently works as a Milk Solids Growth Specialist. In this role, he works closely with dairy farmers to improve herd performance through the use of milk data, nutrition, grassland management, and genetics.
A passionate advocate for grass-based dairy farming, Alex has a keen interest in helping farmers maximise the value of grazed grass and home-grown forage. As a member of the Irish Grassland Association Council, he is committed to supporting knowledge transfer and the continued development of Ireland’s grass-based farming sector.
Outside of farming and work, Alex enjoys playing and following sport, particularly GAA and rugby.
