I’m a 31 year old dairy farmer from ballydehob, west cork. Having Completed the advanced cert in dairy herd management in clonakilty 2004 i was awarded the 2005 Fbd student of the year. In my 9 years farming stock numbers have increased from 35 to 86 with the milking platform increasing from 26ha to 40ha in 2014.

Current kpi’s are as follows. 

• 10T/dm grass growth to date with 46% reseeded in 2014. 
• predicted 2014 ms production is 365kgs/cow or  0.76 ms/kgLw.
• 6 week calving was 89.5% with a 15% replacement rate.
• 78% of cows and 100% of heifers held in 6 weeks this year, with 5% NIC after 12 weeks. 

Given the heavy nature of my farm I’ve a huge passion on finding complementary genetic both in grass and cows. As a result I’m participating in the Teagasc cultivar evaluation. Former monitor farmer for Drinagh co-op
